Hi there, Im relativly new to this game, and currently dont fully understand every nook and cranny of it. It has the essences of other games i have played previously, so item rarity, farming, etc. i am already knowledgeable in. What i dont understand however, is WHERE to farm, WHAT to do with the items i get while farming, and HOW to get SO MANY glyphs of power. I see level 18s or so with awesome mounts, legendary item sets, pets, etc. Im level 22 and still running around with terrible looking leather armor, (most of which is level 13 or so) an improved level 16 axe (gross) and not alot of ability to dish out damage or take much in return. Please, anyone out there, give me some assitance and answers, it will be much appreciated. I look forward to your knowledgable and intelligent responses :)

If you aren't willing to play for 1 or 2 years, or dish out at least 2 to 4 thousand dollars, you should probably quit now. That's how long, or how much, it takes to get somewhat-respectable end-game stats in this game. There is no quick/inexpensive road to end-game.

Those level 18's with awesome mounts, armor, etc, are almost certainly PvP twinks that are artificially keeping their PvE levels low in order to dominate in PvP. They have probably been playing 6 months or a year. Don't let PvE level fool you on amount of time played. Check their PvP title - it's probably way higher than a level 18 would be if they were leveling normally.

We aren't allowed to advertise other games on the forums, but they exist if you go looking.

Also, if you don't care too much about PvP, you can enjoy the game with a lot less than 1-2 years/2-4 thousand dollars. I am F2P and a PvE player... only recently (two years after starting) am I finally getting interested in PvP for the PvP talents that also work in PvE.

Yeah, pay attention to what _Baragain_ said. Don't let me steer you away from the game. If you enjoy the PvE play, keep at it. Just don't expect to have cool-looking gear and be PvP ready after a month or two of free play. It takes much longer than that (or you have to buy your way through).

Haha don't feel bad Sev. It's probably better to save him the trouble than to sugarcoat and waste his time with the game.

I'll throw my thoughts at you now, so prepare yourself. If you want to stay at low level and 'dominate' in PvP as Sev said, you're gonna need exp blockers (people 6+ levels higher than you) to farm with you. You're gonna need lot of gear, which will take a long time to get and identify. Please refer to this thread and the video contained to see just what this game is about. Yes, it will take as long -if not longer- as Drhorrible said. No, you will not dominate in PvP. You will just do moderately good.
It will be a lot worse if you go straight to endgame. It will be a grind 24/7... there isn't an aspect of this game that isn't just a big grind. The only 'for fun' thing I've seen in a very long time is this new event. The drops are pathetic and one map is so ridiculously difficult(time and resource consuming, rather) that I'm led to believe it's just one big joke for us all to participate and have some fun in. In my opinion the event IS fun and was pretty well made, but what I've seen from this game overshadows all of that many, MANY fold. This is a playground and we're all just chew toys for the heaviest of spenders. If you think you'll be the best or even close to the best at anything, you wont. Not unless you put A LOT of money into it. You'd save a lot if you took a trip to like Brazil or something.. and paid using that country's currency since you can get same andermant for a small fraction of the U.S cost, lived there for several years while paying for rent and food, and also learning to speak Portuguese, come back to the U.S (or wherever you live) and still have some money left to buy yourself an expensive gaming computer, mouse, and keyboard so you get to not enjoy the game as you plow through everything and everyone with your level 1 Grand Marshal Spellweaver, relaxing atop your Skeledragon epic mount that you got as a reward from Super Mega Top Gamers' ClubTM.

Some jokes aside, I've been here a long time and I'm still playing.. far from having fun. Because it's a game that stimulates side achievement while I wait for IRL achievements to be acquired(they take some time and it's hard to know because they have no progress bar)... if that sounds like something you're into, by all means, play. If you're not, play anyways because you stumbled onto a trap from which you cannot escape *banshee scream*
No one cares about other people's opinions. Just play for a while and decide for yourself. Don't put too much effort into your first toon, use it as a scout to figure out the game and make some friends. Then start over with an insightful new character. (If you decide you want to keep playing, that is)
Also, beware of servers... some have frequent problems, bad server-wide playing hours (time zones and stuff, our planet can't be on the same page all at once and we can't force Europeans to play at 2 AM of their time), EDIT players, and last but not least, they all have bad lag.

    EDIT

Then you're ready to play as a F2P.

lol, you guys are so negative. Don't make it sound like this game is all about being the best. You'll never be the best, there's always someone else better and with this attitude you'll never enjoy the game.
Let the game be about adventure, playing with others, getting personal achievements, finish events. The game isnt all about pvp, and it s not a must. If you don't have a certain mindset, pvp is only frustrating and will never be fun, not in this game, not in other games.
My advise: Ignore pvp and enjoy pve.

Experiment with the different classes. Well not dwarf because DSO still feels you need to be at least lvl 35 on a different class to "earn the right to play the squishiest most useless class ever created on DSO". I can say that because I have a few dwarfs here and there and everyitme i play one I just get mad at it and wish there were a suicide by steam-handgrenade option I could push and watch it disintegrate into a million pieces because paying 200 ander to delete it is a HUGE rip-off...I digress. Play the game casually and enjoy it as much as you can. Walk away from it though if you feel yourself becoming addicted to it. That's when the spending, anger and forum ranting begins lol.

I'll give you my advice, if you'll take it. To put things into perspective for you, I stopped playing DSO about... 8-10 months ago... whatever. Now, I just check the forum every couple of months, maybe the devs make some major change, but I wouldn't hold my breath ;)

If you're a PvE oriented player, DSO can be good, if you play with friends, and ignore all the goddamn bugs. The downside of DSO's PvE, is that as you lvl up, it becomes just GRIND. Playing the same maps over and over for crappy loot. Btw, for a loot-based game, the loot amounts are very low, and item stats are almost always crappy, thus the constant need to always GRIND for better gear and CoTs to identify it. But enough about that, PvP is(was) my cup of tea.

If you like PvP, and you want to be good, you have 2 options: either farm for a few years ROFL or pay a few thousands of euros. Cuz PvP in DSO is highly PAY2WIN, especially at low lvls. Some technicalities, if you're into it: imagine this, a low lvl guy with 50 base dmg buys a 5 gem slot weapon and 5 atack gems (with real money, ofc), now he has 200 base damage. In arena, the ELO does not put this into consideration, so the 200 dmg guy will fight in arena against non-shoppers 50 dmg guys. That's just for damage, but the shopper will also buy health and armor and magic resistance gems, and other items. Guess who gets stomped? ;)

When I stopped playing, I was a lvl 34 SKOTO. At above lvl 30 PvP, I often fought buffed up, gemmed up shoppers. Sometimes they had no skill, and would have been easy kills, if not for the insane hp/armor/damage they bought with euros. Don't get me wrong, supporting a game with money is perfectly fine. but players should not get godlike because they payed.

You see, from what I experienced, there will always be people who are better than you, either because they paid or because they play 14 hrs a day.
If you want my opinion, then just play, make horrible mistakes, bungle through, make new friends, laugh at how Ankheia looks like Angelina Jolie from Tomb Raider and have fun all the way through. I found grinding as a personal challenge and I generally do timed runs to see how better i get at clearing a course.
if you want to know, I started out as a SW before I found out my "charge straight into mobs" was more Dk-ish, i found out at lvl 20 that "magic" is a rarity and not an item just for SWs(LOL) i found at lvl35 that workbench can be used to craft, <feels all the laughs coming>
but i enjoyed through all that. Endgame is far, for now bungle and learn. and have fun. :)
