To be quite honest all classes can solo. What problems arise are the intelligence of the person playing might play a factor here.

    Steam Mech
This class might be the hardest one to farm with and to do Map 2 but there are a lot of people that have successfully done it and done it well.

I asked which one is the BEST at soloing/PVE. It's a given that all of them can do it.

Hands down, A high end 2H DK. Massive damage and awesome defensive stats mean that you can tank and deal damage. Also good is a 1H DK with high defensive stats. It might take a while, but they can solo anywhere because they are invincible. After those, I'd say a Long Bow Ranger with shield. After those, your start hitting the ones where it is possible to solo, but it gets tough and takes no small amount of skill.

Thanks. Could you tell me whether this game has any of the more unpleasant free-to-play elements, like shelling out cash to skip hundreds of hours of grinding, that sort of thing? Is it pay-to-win in any sense of the word or can you just put in an hour or two a day and have solid progression?

This is very much a P2W game. I am a F2P and have been playing for over 2.5 years. As such, I am on par with P2Ps that have been playing for 4-8 months (The point where it becomes very expensive to be P2W, not just sort of expensive). They made some changes in the most recent release that altered the P2P vs F2P dynamic a bunch, but now, without gold, you are looking at a lot of farming to get the items you want/need. It can be done, but if you are planning to be pure F2P, you will have a lot of pain in PvP because there are people in low level PvP who shell out hundreds of dollars to be almost invincible in early PvP. I have only just started doing serious work on PvP in the past 3-4 months because up to that point, I was just to easy of a kill for the P2Ws.

If you want to do well as a F2P, you are looking at averaging about 2-4 hours a day to do well.

To your original question, which character is better.. that really depends on you and your style of playing. Some characters take a while to get really strong and some get defenses early. I've played all 4 and personally found the spellweaver to work best for me. The talents add up fast as you level up and given some aspects of the game you can hide and kill with relative ease.

To me the ranger was the toughest to play, but that was more of my style of play than the character itself. Dk's build up great defense early, but it takes a while to build up the dmg, but once you do they are tough to beat.

This game is all about grinding for hours and hours, unlike some others you can't buy your way through the levels easily. Yes, there are some exp potion things, but nothing that will shoot you up 90% of the way on day one..

You can't buy the best gear, and no amount of money will make crafting any easier or the drops any better, it's purely a crap shoot.

This game is far from perfect, but it is one of the best that I've played in many years of online gaming...

This game is no different than any of the major named games online...

Unbalanced in pvp, paying customers getting better benefits, bugs, dev's not listening, one character being too strong/weak and so on... Their forums are also much like this one... Translation; Just act like the cool kids and spit on the game you play..
