So I am a noob, I will put that out there. I am level 15 SW and a level 15 ranger. I started with SW because they looked cool. I was running around in wilderness, killing things, doing quests, and around level 18(on my account that got messed up somehow) I started to feel weak, my ranger friends were doing 10x better then me in pvp and pve so I tried ranger, I felt very good at pve and pvp. Everyone says "ranger is bad" "SW is good" but I am not finding that... I want to find the right class before investing time in it. So I would like to know how to use my SW effectively.

Also should I use 1 handed or 2 handed weapon and if 1 handed, a book or a ball, currently im using a 1 handed with a ball.

I would also like some advice on my talent points and what skills I use.
    Thank you!

Hi, I play SW for almost 2 years. 2 or 3 hours everyday. I strongly suggest : Stop SW. Try Steam Mechanicus.
Because SW is weak. I DO have the feeling.
Steam Mechanicus can "fly" long distance. Summer 2 powerful automated Turret . very useful skills.

SW was good until r155. Forget about SW. Do Ranger for PVP, or Dwarf, DK for PVE.

SW has lowest HP. The only class which has lower HP than others.

At the same time Mage doesn't deal the highest damage.

Ranger will beat him in burst dmg, and since PVP is all about burst right now, whoever has higher burst wins.

Dwarf will beat mage in total damage output.

Tank will obviously heal as crazy with the same stats. Very useful in PVE. Not so much in PVE though.

Mage is okay and fun all around class for PVE, and there is some use in 5v5. Mage is still pretty comfortable to work on, very straightforward to develop the char.

You have to decide what you are looking for, pvp or pve. And go from there. Also try other classes while you are 'young'.

IMMUNE IMMUNE IMMUNE , SW always cause enemies IMMUNE . U will see IMMUNE many times.
SW has lots powerful skills . But powerful is not equal to useful.
Ice IMMUNE. Fire IMMUNE. Black hole IMMUNE . Even Guardian cause enemies IMMUNE.
(In painful map, Guardian was eliminated within few seconds)
    ><"
The only thing u can do is: run run run and use magic missile to shot back

This post hahaha, those developers wanted those players using a spellweaver to buy top tier gems and yet the credit still goes to Dks and rangers.
Everything is this game is showing so much favourites to rangers and their skills got no cooldown, i remember allo saying SM is hiding in a corner crying.
His words is proven that we got a noob moderator as well as some rangers player here defending their high powered skills, i face a ranger in 1v1 and he just use scatter shot to kill me and my block rate as high as 78% and block strength about 3.50 isnt that hilarious.
Marking ability should be taken away since they now got srmour break skill and that doesnt require any cooldown at all, why dont they give mages ice sphere explode when it hit something and double damage for that.

SW is still the best class.
Those comments above were made because those players have not put enough time/efforts to play all the classes.
I will still continue creating new SW toons anytime ... because no other class can kill faster than a SW.
As for the fab ... he is a proven idiot or alcohol addict. He has a knowledge of no more than a 2 year child.
    So the best answer is:
play the class you want to don't listen what other players say but listen to yourself ... because in the end all classes are pretty much equal with all of their ups and downs.

My first toon was a ranger. Melee + range: how cool is that? Then (after I got the ranger to lvl 50) I started playing SW. At first, I missed the ranger melee attributes, but as I got used to the mage, I started really liking it. If nothing else, visually/graphically, mage has got the *best* skills (I love the electrical and ice effects; and in all fairness, I never liked the ranger's dead-animal clothing). As for effectiveness: granted, I had built a tanky ranger, so by comparison, my SW kills a lot faster, not even needing essence to kill map bosses.

In a nutshell, I switched loyalties.

And yes: it's not the type of toon that makes a winner, it's the player.

P.S. Been hearing lots of good stuff about dwarves lately. H'mm...

I have seen this is and pisses me off
Here's the thing I like both the ranger and SW but both people say is weak and some say they are the strongest, should I just go with SW?

Honestly SM are ugly as heck, but I will go with them if there good... So you like SW more then ranger?

Yeah, dwarves are not what you want if toon aesthetics matter. ;)

Currently, yes, I personally like SW > RA. But ultimately, it all depends on your playing style. I like solo PvE, which means crowd control is important, and the SW has great skills to that end, allowing the mage to fight on 2-3 fronts at once. Others like PvP, where high burst dmg matters, and rangers (so I've heard) are best for that.

But again, it's the player, not the toon, that makes the game.

My personal opinion: you should go with the SW.

4 characters, 4 approaches, with different optimal distances to target. Wear what fits you.
Dragon Knight - melee, up close and personal, in your face fighting.
Ranger - distance fighting with bow, or nature servants
Spell Weaver - fighting with magical use of elements and time
Steam Mechanic - select mechanical tools for the situation

The different classes progress at different speeds, so the question also depends on what is more important: now, or later.
In theory, the mage ultimately triumphs, but we are in DSO's fantasy.

As Trakilaki said, SW is the strongest class.
I play all four classes and they are all quite good when strong. SW ranks top.

Oh, dear... although probably not intended by the OP, this has turned into another of those "class clash" threads *le sigh*...

It's rather difficult to compare two classes if you've not reached endgame and started optimizing. The road up to lv40+ is usually doable for everyone, and from that level range up, people start the real phase of building their chars (some do not start optimizing until they're lv50). I've said it many times, as did other people: just keep playing and only farm for better gear if you're having trouble progressing. When you reach higher levels, you will be able to more accurately compare your SW to your RA, if you have the time/will/resources to take them both to level cap.
For starters... LOL, black hole - but I've heard worse... vortex soup, haha.

On to serious matters now... I don't mean to be rude, but you seem to have no idea what those immunities stand for.

ICE - the mobs are immune to the SLOWING and STUN effects (usually bosses/mini-bosses).
FIRE - no idea... with this element you cause damage and burn, and I don't remember those being immune-prone. Am I missing something?
SINGULARITY - this causes SLOWING and ARMOR BREAK; its damage is immune-prone, others apply, again, mostly to bosses/mini-bosses.
GUARDIAN - some mobs are immune to its AGGRO-PULLING effect.

Now, I assure you other classes' SLOWING, STUN and AGGRO-PULL effects will be just as useless versus the mobs the above SW skills are of no aid against (bar the latest DK skill, if I'm not mistaken - I apologize if I overlooked anything). Also, doesn't it seem normal to you that most bosses should be harder to defeat, thus immune to some cripples one can inflict? If we could stun, slow and armor break ANY mob, then anyone could do even the hardest boss by just spamming their effects as often as possible and dodging while the stuns are on cooldown.

    NO ... NO ... NO!!!!!!!!!!
    You are all off topic.
I never said SW is strongest class (which is off topic and won't help the OP) I said : SW is the best class.
    - easy to play
    - the style of playing suits to any player ... beginner or veteran
    - if you can't find the group you can always kill every thing solo ... pretty quick (even on cap level ... of course when you get strong enough)
    - SW's set of skills can help you hit the target from any direction
    - you can use the terrain better than any other class ... you can stun, dodge, hide behind a obstacle and hit the target ... etc
    - you don't need to change your playing style too much even when transiting from PVE to PVP
    - ....

now that makes perfect sense. SW is indeed easy and fun to play. except for the last item (sometime), total agreement.

Yes, SW is the best class and also is the strongest.

I find that the enjoyment level varies as each character I have finds better equipment or struggles with stuff that is several levels lower than that toon is. Since you have four slots and are just beginning, why not try one of each. As you play, you'll find which style better suits you. Then work on building that character up.

There are several threads with titles like 'Show what you have' where you can read up on what others have done both in terms of gear and in optimizing it.
